A small, savory, deep-fried round ball made from cornmeal-based batter. Hushpuppies are frequently served as a side dish in Louisiana with seafood and other deep-fried foods. The name has no verified origin, but it is said that it came from hunters, fishermen, or soldiers in the American Civil War who would fry some basic cornmeal mixture and feed it to their dogs to keep them quiet. Pretty cool! I know anytime I have fried seafood I have to have my side of hushpuppies with it!
